today I learned: every day, sikh temples are required to provide a free, hot meal to anyone regardless of race, gender, or creed. also, pale skin only evolved in europe 6000-10,000 years ago, likely for the purpose of absorbing more vitamin D! NEAT! next, between 1975 and 1982, russia had six probes on the surface of VENUS, surviving temperatures of 855 degrees fahrenheit and successfully taking photos (scroll down to the next post to see some! weooo!). finally, of all the animals rescued by the PETA headquarters in the US, 96% of them are euthanized by the organization. sigh. I guess it’s time to burn my PETA shirt… (oh, and just as a little bonus, I also learned that the body mass index (BMI) was created for a social statistics experiment, and was never intended to be an indicator of health…)

  1. Dayton says:

The quetelet index, know commonly known as the BMI, was the brain child of Adolphe Queletel in 1869. It wasn’t until 1972 in a study by Keys et al. that it became known as the BMI. Just a side note. I was drafting a paper on the prevention of obesity this morning before I read your blog. Keep up the good work.
